Myth: Foam rolling your IT band will fix the problem. Keep foam rolling to get rid of it.
Fact: Foam rolling the IT band will only provide short term relief. You need to address the real impairment in order to solve the problem and get back to moving such as running and walking pain free. Many times this involves strengthening the hips, especially the glutes which are often weak in those dealing with IT band issues.
Myth: Your IT Band is tight so you need to stretch it.
Fact: Stretching, again, may provide short term relief. However, much of the research shows that you cannot change the flexibility or length of the IT band. While stretching may provide short term relief, you likely need to find the source of the problem in order to fix the problem. This may be strengthening, getting the right shoes for your body, fixing your stride etc.
